‘Medical’ Marijuana Health Benefits

Marijuana has been legalized in several US states; 20 states have legalized marijuana for medical uses; two states-Colorado and Washington state-also allow recreational use.

New regulations help researchers study Marijuana’s medicinal uses and better understand how it affets the body. There are two active chemicals in marijuana that study think have medicinal benefits. Those are cannabidiol (CBD) — which seems to affect the brain without a high— and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) — which has pain relieving  properties.

Other common ailments being treated with cannabis include:

  • Mood disorders
  • Pain management
  • Degenerative neurological disorders (ex. dystonia)
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • PTSD
  • Seizure – researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University discovered that ingredients found in natural marijuana “play a critical role in controlling spontaneous seizures

“There are no deaths from cannabis use. Anywhere. You can’t find one,” said Dr. Lester Grinspoon, professor emeritus at Harvard Medical School.
